Primus windshield

Last week I bought this wee bit of kit from Bob & Rose at Backpackinglight. Tested over this weekend in the Lakes, I can say that it works a treat, and when not in use it clips, inverted, over the canister, so it takes up no more room in your pack. In fact, many pots and kettles will still allow the canister to be stowed inside with the windshield fitted over it. Perfick!

And to make the stove much more stable, for the past couple of years I have been using the Primus canister foot - a sort of fold-up tripod that clips on to most sizes of canister.

The saving on gas, time and the added safety and stability are well worth the very small weight penalty. 60g for the wind shield, 23g for the canister feet. You can buy them both from Backpackinglight

I used both on the Challenge this year. The wind shield was OK but I'm not sure that it was any more effective that the bit of tin foil I have used for the past ten years that came with my MSR stove. However if you don't have a wind shield already it's OK but a bit expensive a £10. The little plastic tripod however is a waste of money. Mine lasted about 10 days before stress cracks developed form the repeated opening and closing. Also it is only the correct size for one type (read make) of canister, other makes are a very loose fit and can fall out of the foot.
That's by 2D.
Grumpy.

Oh dear Mr G - shame about the tripod. I've had mine for 2 years and it's been OK so far. It was a bit stiff to open at first though (bit of vaseline from the first aid kit fixed that). Not had a problem with canisters fitting.

I found the windshield much quicker and easier to use than my old foil one, which kept falling over and generally getting in the way. So I reckon it's worth it. Have to be careful about which stove you use it with though - if the flame shoots out sideways at full chat it gets hot under the burner and I did melt the ignition button recently!
